FIELD NOTE
Capability changes the boundary
Anthropic describes Claude Sonnet 5 as a more agentic model with stronger planning, tool use, coding, and professional-work capability. That is a product announcement, not proof that every workflow should be handed to an autonomous agent.
The practical consequence is that the surrounding system matters more: permissions, budgets, tools, prompts, retrieval, human approval, and logging determine the real risk and value.
FIELD NOTE
Choose the smallest useful autonomy
Start with a defined task and a constrained toolset. Let the system prepare, classify, or recommend before allowing it to change records or contact people.
- Read before write
- Draft before send
- Approval before material action
- Time and spend limits
- Traceable tool calls
- A recoverable stop state
FIELD NOTE
Model quality is only one input
A capable model can still act on incomplete data, misunderstand an instruction, or reach the wrong system. Evaluate the whole operating path, including exceptions and the people who remain accountable.
DIRECT ANSWERS
Questions operators ask
Does a more agentic model replace workflow design?+
No. It increases the need for workflow design because the system can take more steps and touch more tools.
What should a buyer ask before adopting an agentic model?+
Ask what the agent can access and change, how actions are approved and logged, how failures stop, and how the business can export or replace the model later.
